Design Brief

Developed as part of a third-year academic project, ExtrudeX is a compact recycling machine that converts PET plastic waste into usable 3D printing filament through an integrated shredding, filtering, melting, and extrusion process.

Aimed at promoting sustainability and cost-efficiency, the machine offers an environmentally friendly solution for makers, educational institutions, and small-scale users by encouraging the reuse of plastic through additive manufacturing.

To design a compact and efficient machine that enables institutions to convert PET bottle waste into high-quality 3D printing filament through an integrated recycling process.

Research & Problem

India faces a massive plastic waste challenge — existing solutions focus only on shredding, leaving a gap in end-to-end recycling.

Problem Statement

Despite high recycling rates, most existing solutions only address the shredding stage of plastic recycling. The recycling process remains time-consuming, and plastic bottle waste continues to be a significant pollutant. There is no compact, integrated solution for converting PET waste directly into usable 3D printing filament.

How It Works

Four integrated stages transform PET bottle waste into high-quality 3D printing filament.

01

Shredding

PET bottles are fed through the inlet flap and shredded into small flakes by the integrated shredder mechanism.

02

Filtering

Plastic flakes are cleaned and filtered through a 4mm mesh to ensure consistent particle size for melting.

03

Melting

Filtered flakes are heated and melted into a molten state, ready for extrusion through the die.

04

Extruding

Molten plastic is extruded through a precision die and wound onto a spool as usable 3D printing filament.
